Urdu, which is a widely spoken language in Pakistan, India and adjoining countries, follows Arabic and Persian scripts in writing. Like both Persian and Arabic it’s written from right to left and in cursive manner. Usually same words in Urdu and Arabic are written in a similar pattern or with only a slight deviation.
Being a native Urdu speaker, I find it easier to read Arabic in the Middle Eastern countries until there are some words which are written in a distinctive way. One of them is Mona, a name for a girl and perhaps one of the most famous names in the World thanks to the Leonardo da Vinci’s painting. This name is common in Asian, Gulf and European countries.
Mona is written as مونا in Urdu
Mona in Arabic is منى . Here Meem (Arabic Alphabet) has a Damma over it (Damma is an apostrophe-like shape written above the consonant which precedes it in pronunciation)
Travelling can not only show you the famous painting of Mona Lisa in The Louvre Museum, Paris but also can make you learn variety of ways to write it. So here’s how I greeted her in Paris “Hello Mona, مونا and منى”
