Nizwa is one of the oldest cities in Oman and the capital of Ad Dakhiliyah governorate. There are many things to do and places to visit within Nizwa or nearby both for solo visitors or for family. Nizwa will serve you as a base camp for the exploration of the Western Hijar Mountains and the other nearby towns and wadis.
I visited Nizwa and nearby places in Ad Dakhiliyah governorate couple of times in 2018, 2019 and 2022 and each time Nizwa impressed me. Its an ancient city with modern looks as well. You can find an old souq as well as a modern market, an ancient mosque as well as modern large mosque, a fort as well as train that goes inside the cave, this diversity simply is what captures my attention.

Besides the Fort, a beautiful ancient mosque, Al Qala’a Mosque, is located. Non-Muslims cannot enter inside, but from outside, they can witness the architecture of the mosque.
