Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, also known as Sultan Qaboos Masjid, is located in Nizwa – the largest city in Ad Dakhiliyah Governorate and one of the oldest city in Oman. The mosque is at the base of the wester side of the famous mountain range – Hajar Mountains.
I visited Sultan Qaboos Masjid in summer (September 2019) and in the day time on the way from Muscat to Salalah. Read more about Muscat to Salalah Road Trip. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is visible from the highway as well.
Nizwa has some other places to visit like Nizwa Fort, Nizwa Souq, Nizwa Grand Mall and serves as a base camp for some amazing road trips to Jabal Akhdar and Jebel Shams.

This beautiful mosque is named after His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, the late sultan of Oman. It was inaugurated in 2015, and was constructed during his 50 years rule, who died in 2020 and was succeeded by his cousin Haitham Bin Tariq.
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Nizwa is the second largest mosque in Oman, after Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat. The mosque, built on 80,000 square meters, is capable of accommodating up to 10,500 worshippers.
Nizwa’s Sultan Qaboos Mosque has a beautiful yet simple Islamic architecture. The mosque has four large minarets with a large dome in the center.
There is a huge car parking outside the mosque, measuring approximately 30,000 square meters.
The mosque is located on the intersection of Highway 15 and Highway 31 – the two popular highways that connect Nizwa with Muscat and other parts of Oman. Check the Google Location of Sultan Qaboos Mosque Nizwa.
After the ablution area and climbing the stairs, one can reach to the fabulous courtyard of the mosque.
The pillars and the chandeliers make the architecture similar to that of Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat and Sultan Qaboos Mosque in Salalah.
Main hall is located on the top floor. The light color carpet is laid on the floor for praying.
This is air-conditioned hall with well distributed lighting.
A beautiful and large chandelier hangs over the main central dome of the mosque.
A separate praying hall is located inside the mosque for female worshippers. The entrance to that hall is separate and has its own ablutions and toilets.
Inside the male ablution area, on the lower floor, there are couple of water taps in a row. The taps have a timer and they shut off the water after the pre-set time. This helps in preserving water.
Muslims do ablution before prayer. During ablution, they wash their hands, face, head and feet in a prescribed format as described by Prophet Mohammed PBUH.
Toilets are very clean, and definitely looks like the one in any 5 star resort.
