Swimming is not only a good sport and keeps a person physically fit. It is an important skill that shouldn’t be ignored. In fact it’s a life saving skill.
Our Prophet Mohammed Peace Be Upon Him also emphasized on swimming. The Prophet said: “Everything in which there is no remembrance of Allah is idle play, except four things: a man playing with his wife; a man training his horse; a man running between two lines (as in a race); and a man learning how to swim.” Narrated by an-Nasaa’i in as-Sunan al-Kubra (8889); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in as-Saheehah (315).
The swimming is a skill that all must know. That’s why knowing it is being emphasized by Islam as well. You can be in any scenarios, what will you do?
Learning swimming was on my to do list for few years, but couldn’t learn it until 2019. As I am a resident in Salalah, a beautiful city on the shore of Arabian Sea, I looked for the learning options here.
I did some research but the information was not available online. Then I personally asked several people and here in this post, I am summarizing all options about how to learn swimming in Salalah, Oman.
To summarize, I learnt swimming from Crowne Plaza Resort Salalah, while my wife learnt it from Saada Sports Complex.
Children can learn swimming in Crowne Plaza Resort Salalah. As per my information, there are instructors with different nationalities – Indian, Srilankan and Pilipino, which makes it quite easy for one to select from the options of native language.
For 10 learning lessons, each child is charged 32 Omani Rials.
The same instructors in Crowne Plaza (basically they are life guards, who are teaching when they are free) teach swimming to the adults too. Fee for an adult is 42 rials for 10 lessons.

The instructors at Crowne Plaza Resort Salalah can teach swimming to men, women and children. But since it’s a common pool for all and all the instructors are male, therefore, for ladies it will be quite inconvenient, specially if you are Muslim.
For women, better option is to learn in Saada Sports Complex, which is located in Saada besides Dhofar University / ROP Saada. There is an indoor swimming pool with a fixed timing for only ladies use.
Every week on Sunday and Tuesday, the pool is reserved for ladies use from 7pm to 8pm. During this time, women can learn swimming in Salalah. For 6 months membership, the fee is 30 rials Omani.
